In 1944, amidst the backdrop of World War II, Malmö Opera och Musikteater first opened its doors. Originally called Malmö Stadsteater, it was a beacon of hope and a testament to the city’s enduring love for the arts. Imagine the excitement as the grand entrance, with its marble-clad columns and large windows, welcomed its first audience. This architectural masterpiece, designed by Sigurd Lewerentz, David Helldén, and Erik Lallerstedt, combined functionalism with classical elements, creating a truly unique space. Malmö Opera och Musikteater boasts one of the largest auditoriums in Scandinavia, seating 1,511 people. Designed as an enclosed amphitheater, it ensures perfect visibility for every single guest. A large revolving stage, influenced by the renowned German director Max Reinhardt, allows for dynamic and complex productions. From its inception, Malmö Opera och Musikteater housed a variety of performances. It served as a home for spoken theater, opera, operetta, ballet, pantomime, and symphonic concerts. The main foyer is a work of art in itself, adorned with pieces by Carl Milles and Isaac Grünewald. Malmö Opera och Musikteater has hosted numerous iconic figures throughout its history. Think of Ingmar Bergman and his famed actors, the legendary opera singer Birgit Nilsson, and even Eurovision Song Contest events in 1988, 1995, 1998, and 2001. The theater also had its own ballet company from 1944 to 1995, showcasing both classical and original works. In the early 1990s, Malmö Stadsteater underwent a significant restructuring. It was divided into separate companies for spoken theater, opera, modern dance, and the Malmö Symphony Orchestra. The opera company, now known as Malmö Opera, continues to present a diverse program of classic and contemporary operas and musicals. Malmö Opera och Musikteater has also been a champion of new Swedish works, commissioning pieces from contemporary composers. The Opera Workshop, established in 2002, introduces children and young people to the magic of opera through interactive performances and educational programs. The building has undergone renovations over the years, most recently in 2004, to maintain its position as a state-of-the-art performance venue. As you stand before Malmö Opera och Musikteater today, you stand before a symbol of resilience, creativity, and artistic passion. It is a place where history echoes through the grand halls and the future of music and theater takes center stage.
