Tucked away in Chiba, Enpuku-ji Temple beckons us with its serene presence. This temple, the 27th station on the Bandō Sanjūsankasho pilgrimage circuit, holds a captivating tale. Enpuku-ji’s story begins, according to legend, in 728. A fisherman, casting his net, snagged not fish, but a statue of the Eleven-Faced Kannon. This divine encounter led to the statue’s enshrinement, a precursor to the temple’s formal establishment. Enpuku-ji Temple’s founding is traditionally attributed to the renowned monk Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi) between 810 and 824. He is said to have constructed the main hall and conducted sacred rituals within its walls. The temple’s grounds once housed a vibrant collection of structures, including a striking vermillion five-storied pagoda. A five-meter statue of Amitabha (Great Buddha) also graced the grounds. So did Japan’s largest embroidery of the reclining Buddha. Sadly, the aerial bombing of Chōshi during World War II decimated much of Enpuku-ji. Yet, its spirit endures. Today, the temple, also known as Iinuma Kannon, continues to draw worshippers and visitors seeking solace. Festivals held on the 18th of each month offer a glimpse into the temple’s enduring vibrancy. Enpuku-ji, though scarred by history, stands as a testament to resilience and faith. It invites us to reflect on the ebb and flow of time, the enduring power of belief, and the serene beauty of Kannon’s compassion.
