Did Hans Nagel ever imagine his “ohne Titel” would become a silent sentinel on Mannheim’s Kunstmeile? Here we stand before it, this towering sculpture, more commonly known as “ohne Titel (Turm)”. Completed in 1972, the ohne Titel Sculpture stands as a testament to the Kunsthalle Mannheim’s dedication to showcasing modern and contemporary sculpture. The Kunsthalle, established in 1909, has long been a champion of sculptural art. Its collection boasts an impressive array of pieces. From Rodin to Hirschhorn, and even installations by artists like Alicja Kwade and James Turrell, the Kunsthalle has embraced the evolution of three-dimensional art. “ohne Titel” finds its home among these giants of the sculptural world. The Kunsthalle Mannheim’s Mitzlaff building once housed this extensive collection. This building, specifically designed for sculpture, sadly met its end in 2014. Before its demolition, a unique exhibition unfolded. Four sculptors, including the artist Bogomir Ecker, curated a show using Mannheim’s sculpture collection. They reimagined the presentation of these works. For nine months, the Mitzlaff building became a canvas for their vision. This innovative spirit reflects the Kunsthalle’s ongoing commitment to exploring the dynamic relationship between art and space. So as we admire Nagel’s ohne Titel, we also acknowledge the Kunsthalle Mannheim. This institution constantly seeks new ways to engage with art. The ohne Titel Sculpture stands not just as a singular piece. It also stands as a symbol of this ongoing conversation.
