It began as a partnership between five Denver-area school districts: Aurora, Cherry Creek, Denver, Douglas County, and Littleton. The Public Education and Business Coalition also joined this educational endeavor. They shared a vision inspired by Outward Bound. They wanted to bring the thrill of exploration into the classroom.
Rocky Mountain School of Expeditionary Learning opened its doors to 215 students in grades K-9. Now, it educates 381 students from K-12. The student body reflects the diversity of its sponsoring districts, with approximately 25% students of color. The school’s mission is to make students and staff learners, thinkers, citizens, and explorers. The motto? “We are crew, not passengers.” This speaks to the active role everyone takes in their education.
