Tucked away on the outskirts of Seoul, Gambuk-dong whispers tales of overflowing waters and bustling laundry hills. Gambuk-dong, a name derived from “gam” meaning water and “buk” meaning north, holds a unique history intertwined with the Han River and the city’s growth. Gambuk-dong is a neighborhood within the city of Hanam, in Gyeonggi Province. It’s located just 18 kilometers east of the bustling capital, Seoul. Gambuk-dong translates to “North Water Cave Village”. This name hints at its past, a time when water flowed abundantly from the nearby mountains, shaping the lives and livelihoods of its residents. One particular spot, Bbalae-gol, or “Washing Clothes Hill”, tells a story of community and royal connection. This area, nestled around present-day Suyu-dong, was once a hub of activity centered around the water flowing from Samgaksan Mountain. Villagers would gather to wash their clothes, palace maids included. The image of vibrant fabrics drying in the sun, the chatter of conversations echoing through the valley, paints a vivid picture of Gambuk-dong’s past. Another intriguing piece of Gambuk-dong’s history lies in the name Gao-ri. During the Joseon Dynasty, Seoul’s city wall extended 10 ri in each direction. The unique terrain of Ui-dong, part of Gambuk-dong, led to an extension of the city limits by 5 ri. Thus, Gao-ri, meaning “5 more ri,” became a part of the capital’s embrace. Gambuk-dong, a place where water flowed, clothes were washed, and boundaries were extended, offers a unique glimpse into the history of Seoul and its surrounding areas. The echoes of its past resonate in its present, a testament to its enduring connection to nature, community, and the ebb and flow of time.
