Imagine living in a time of tyranny where speaking out meant certain death. Here at Simon-Dach-Straße 33 stands a memorial to one such brave soul. We are standing in front of the Rudolf Paetzold Plaque.

This plaque commemorates Rudolf Paetzold. He was an antifascist resistance fighter. Paetzold was born on November 24, 1919. The Nazis murdered him on January 16, 1944. The inscription honors his memory.

The Rudolf Paetzold Plaque serves as a stark reminder. It reminds us of the cost of freedom. It stands as a testament to Paetzold’s courage. He lived in this very house. He actively resisted the Nazi regime.

Paetzold’s story is one of defiance. He tried to convince other soldiers about the futility of the war starting in 1942. His actions were deemed “undermining military strength”. He was sentenced to death and executed.

The original Rudolf Paetzold Plaque was installed in 1950. It was renewed in 1978. After the Berlin Wall came down, the plaque disappeared in 1990.

The Aktives Museum then stepped in. They installed replacement plaques in 1991 and 1993. The first replacement was soon damaged. The second plaque detailed Paetzold’s efforts to sway soldiers.

The current bronze Rudolf Paetzold Plaque is back in its place. It is set into the wall next to the entrance. This happened after the original disappeared. It ensures Paetzold’s sacrifice is not forgotten.

Take a moment to reflect on Rudolf Paetzold’s bravery. He stood against evil. He paid the ultimate price. May his memory inspire us to stand up for what is right. The Rudolf Paetzold Plaque is more than just a memorial. It is a call to action.
