Established in 1999, Makuhari Church stands as the sole church in a densely populated neighborhood of nearly 28,000 people, just outside the bustling metropolis of Tokyo. Imagine that, a single church serving a community that rivals some small towns. This area, known as Kaihin Makuhari, is a mere 38-minute train ride from Tokyo’s heart. It’s a mix of businesses, a recreational center, a university, and residential zones. Makuhari Church is located in Mihama Ward, a city with a population of 150,000. The church’s location is especially important when you consider the ratio of churches to people. Tokyo averages roughly one Protestant church for every 15,000 people. Mihama Ward, however, has almost double that number of people per church. This makes Makuhari Church a vital spiritual center for the community. The church’s neighborhood, initially called BAY-TOWN, is packed with apartment complexes and boasts the highest concentration of children and young families in Mihama Ward. Right next door, a new development, BAY-PARK, is underway. Over the next decade, six high-rise buildings will spring up, adding another 10,000 residents to the area. This will bring the total population within a 15 to 20-minute walk of Makuhari Church to a staggering 35,000. For a single church, the potential for outreach and community impact is enormous. Makuhari Church is one of just five Protestant churches in all of Mihama Ward and the only one serving this burgeoning population. These include starting a new bilingual afternoon service to connect with the new BAY-PARK residents and expanding its campus ministry to reach and nurture the next generation.
