Why name a school after a language teacher? That’s the question many ask when they first encounter the Gustav-Langenscheidt-Schule. It’s more than just a name. It’s a connection to Berlin’s rich history of education and innovation.

The Gustav-Langenscheidt-Schule stands as a testament to Berlin’s ever-evolving educational landscape. This school is located in Berlin-Schöneberg near the St.-Norbert-Kirche and the Heinrich-Lassen-Park. The school building is listed as a historical monument.

Originally founded as the Hohenzollern-Schule in 1899 the school has undergone several transformations. The building itself was constructed between 1897 and 1899 based on designs by Paul Egeling. Its doors opened to students in 1900.

During the Nazi era, in 1938, it was renamed Scharnhorstschule after the Prussian military figure Gerhard von Scharnhorst. World War II left its mark. In 1943, a bomb severely damaged the school building. Repairs continued until 1955. The school reopened that same year.

In 1956, it became the Riesengebirgs-Oberschule. This name referenced the Riesengebirge Mountains. These mountains were located in the former Prussian province of Silesia.

Finally, in 2010, the school adopted its current name. It was named after Gustav Langenscheidt. He was a language teacher and founder of the nearby Langenscheidt publishing house.

The Gustav-Langenscheidt-Schule embraced change. In 1999, it became a model school as a combined Haupt- and Realschule. Then, in the 2010/2011 school year, it transformed into an integrated secondary school with all-day programs.

Today, the Gustav-Langenscheidt-Schule continues to educate students. It has a focus on vocational training. Students can study English, French, and Spanish. In the school year 2023/2024, 404 students were taught by 45 teachers.

Many notable figures have passed through these halls. Marie Kalau vom Hofe was a neurologist and psychoanalyst. She graduated in 1911. Hanna Katz, a lawyer, graduated in 1915. Artists like Henry Rox, musicians like Karl Dechert, and journalists like Günter Prinz all attended this school. Max Pohlenz a classical philologist was one of its teachers.

As you stand before the Gustav-Langenscheidt-Schule remember its journey. From the Hohenzollern-Schule to its current form. It reflects Berlin’s resilience and commitment to education.
