“Everton Hills? Where’s that?” you might ask. Well, it’s just here, a charming suburb nestled in the heart of Brisbane’s north, quietly whispering tales of a bygone era. It shares its name with its neighbor Everton Park, which in turn was named after the residence of pioneer settler Ambrose McDowall. McDowall was quite the character, you see, having named his residence after Everton, a suburb in Liverpool, England. And that’s how this little corner of Queensland got its name! Everton Hills, though quieter than its neighbor, holds a special place in the city’s history. It sits on land once belonging to the Yugarabul people, long before settlers arrived.
Now, stroll back to 1932. Imagine the dust swirling as a new Baptist church was built in a single day, just like that! It was a bustling community then, a time when Bunyaville, as it was known, served as a real center for the area. The church, however, wasn’t to stay there forever. It eventually was moved elsewhere, and now, you can visit Hills Church, a Wesleyan Methodist church in its place.
Everton Hills is home to Prince of Peace Lutheran College, a secondary school for boys and girls. This school opened its doors in 1984. The church just next to it, however, is even newer, opening in 1986.
But beyond the churches and schools, Everton Hills is a community-driven place. You’ll find numerous hardware and automotive shops here, serving the suburb’s needs. You’ll also find shops in the neighboring suburbs of Mitchelton and Everton Park. It’s a vibrant little corner of the city, and it’s easy to see why so many people choose to call it their home. So, as you stroll through, keep your eyes open, and you might just catch a glimpse of the history that unfolds before you.
