Intrigued by a surveyor’s mark etched into the pavement? This seemingly insignificant symbol connects us to the Thuringian State Office for Land Management and Geoinformation, the TLBG. Right here, at Hohenwindenstraße 13a, stands the TLBG. It’s not just an office building. It’s a repository of the very land beneath our feet, a record of ownership, boundaries, and the stories etched into Thuringia’s landscape. The TLBG, established in 2019, is relatively young. But its roots run deep, tracing back to the merger of the TLVermGeo and parts of three Offices for Rural Development and Land Consolidation. Even further back, the foundation of Thuringia’s precise land surveying dates to 1803. Commissioned by Prussia, Franz Xaver von Zach, director of the Gotha Observatory, employed an innovative technique using powder flash signals. This method proved remarkably efficient, laying the groundwork for the intricate network of survey points that crisscrosses Thuringia today. Inside the TLBG, within these walls, lies a wealth of information. From property lines to topographical maps, it’s a treasure trove of geographic data. Imagine the stories these records could tell, the evolution of land ownership, the shifting boundaries of fields and forests over centuries. Here, the past and present converge, shaping our understanding of Thuringia’s landscape. Today, the TLBG continues this legacy. It maintains the land registry, conducts surveys, and provides essential geoinformation services. The TLBG is more than just an office.
