Ready to explore a building that started as a mill? This is the Stadtlagerhaus. The Stadtlagerhaus is a unique structure in Hamburg-Altona-Altstadt. It began its life in 1880. It was originally built as a mill. Today, it serves as a residential and commercial building.

The Stadtlagerhaus sits on Große Elbstraße. It is on the bank of the Norderelbe River. You will find it west of the Fischauktionshalle and the Fischmarkt. It is right in the heart of the Hamburg harbor.

Notice the Stadtlagerhaus’s striking architecture. The original building is made of brick. A modern, double-shell glass facade has been added. This addition houses apartments. The building has a gabled roof. Inside, there is a unique feature. It has an internal space with a paternoster parking system.

Take a look at the bridge connected to the Stadtlagerhaus. This bridge leads to the second floor. It provides access during storm surges. This is important in a city so close to the water.

The Stadtlagerhaus has seen many changes. In 1903 and 1904, a cloverleaf-shaped annex was added. Raabe & Wöhlecke designed this addition. It was used as a silo. The mill was converted in the late 1990s. The glass structure was added at this time. The silo was given a gabled roof.

From 1998 to 2001, Jan Störmer redesigned and expanded the building again. The Stadtlagerhaus has transformed over the years. It has changed from a mill to a modern building. It blends old and new architecture. The Stadtlagerhaus is a testament to Hamburg’s ability to adapt.
