Contemplate this: A metal behemoth, fresh from the Elefsis Shipyards, slicing through the waves. These shipyards have a story as deep as the Aegean Sea itself. Founded in 1968, the Elefsis Shipyards quickly became a major player. They are located in Elefsis Bay less than a half-hour from Piraeus.

Elefsis Shipyards aren’t just about building ships. They are about Greek industry. They’ve constructed massive bulk carriers. These were the largest ever built in Greece. The yard also produces military vessels. The Jason-class tank landing ships are one example. Elefsis Shipyards developed them and the first was launched in 1987. The Promitheus, the Greek Navy’s largest support ship, was also built here.

The story of Elefsis Shipyards isn’t always smooth sailing. In 1975, the shipyard was nationalized. This led to a period of decline. Privatization followed in the early 1990s. The yard changed ownership several times. Debt accumulated, and operations eventually ceased during Greece’s economic crisis.

But the Elefsis Shipyards’ story doesn’t end there. A new chapter began in 2022. ONEX, with support from the American government’s DFC and Fincantieri, took over. They are working to revive the shipyard. Upgrading facilities is a priority.

The Elefsis Shipyards occupy a vast area of 250,000 square meters. This area includes three floating docks. The largest dock is 252 meters long and 45 meters wide. It can handle ships up to 120,000 DWT. These docks are being reactivated and outfitted with cranes.

The future looks bright for the Elefsis Shipyards. The goal is to repair 150 vessels per year. There are also plans to build two to three navy warships annually. Maintenance contracts for the Hellenic Navy and the US 6th Fleet are also targeted.

Elefsis Shipyards have seen successes. The first vessel after reactivation underwent repairs here for four months. Since then, several other vessels have been repaired at Elefsis Shipyards.

From bulk carriers to naval ships, the Elefsis Shipyards have left their mark. They stand as a testament to Greek shipbuilding. They show resilience and a commitment to innovation. As you stand here, imagine the clang of metal. Picture the sparks flying as new vessels take shape. The Elefsis Shipyards are not just a place. They are a symbol of Greece’s industrial spirit.
