Envision a serene green space. It is a welcome contrast to the urban hustle. This is Ivy Hill Park. It is a neighborhood park with a rich history.

Ivy Hill Park’s story began in 1927. The City of Newark designated 18 acres for its creation. The aim was to meet the recreational needs of nearby communities. These included Maplewood, South Orange, Irvington, and of course, Newark itself.

The renowned Olmsted Brothers firm designed Ivy Hill Park. This firm shaped many Essex County parks since the 1890s. Their design transformed the land into a valuable community asset.

Over time, Ivy Hill Park expanded. By 1938, it reached its final size of 18.96 acres. The Works Progress Administration made gradual improvements during its first 11 years.

Ivy Hill Park is very popular. Its location is close to high-rise apartments and Seton Hall University. Private housing units are also nearby.

A unique agreement in 1986 benefited Ivy Hill Park. Essex County secured a 25-year no-cost lease with Seton Hall University. This added one acre to the park. It also included six tennis courts. The park now boasts ten tennis courts. In return, the County renovated the courts. Seton Hall University can use the park’s facilities.

Further improvements have enhanced Ivy Hill Park. The field area was redesigned. Now it accommodates football, soccer, baseball, and softball. The basketball court and playground were also improved.

Ivy Hill Park offers a band concert area. It has baseball fields, a football field, and a soccer field. There is also a lighted basketball court and a playground.

Ivy Hill Park stands as a testament to community planning. It provides recreational space for diverse populations. Its well-maintained facilities and Olmsted design make it a cherished local treasure.
