In 1952, a small group of Catholic families began meeting for Eucharist in Sarojini Nagar. They gathered at the home of the late Mr. Philip Nair. This humble beginning marked the first step towards the establishment of St. Thomas Church in R.K. Puram, a prominent landmark in South Delhi today. St. Thomas Church, often referred to as the Red Brick Church, stands as a testament to the growth and resilience of the Christian community in South Delhi. Built in 1972, its distinctive red brick architecture, designed by George Walter, reflects an East European style, setting it apart from its surroundings. The church’s history is intertwined with the Holy Child Auxilium School. After the school’s establishment in 1971, the need for a dedicated place of worship in South Delhi became apparent. The then Archbishop of Delhi initiated a search, which led to the plot of land where St. Thomas Church now stands. The church’s unique geometric design, a hallmark of Walter’s work, adds to its visual appeal. The interior features a polygonal sanctuary with high semicircular windows, deviating from traditional cross floor plans. A wooden altar, bathed in soft light, serves as the focal point. Outside, manicured trees, vibrant flowers, and lush grass create a tranquil setting. St. Thomas Church serves a diverse congregation, offering masses in English, Hindi, Malayalam, and Tamil. It also plays a vital role in the community through Sunday school and various associations that support different causes. The church’s namesake, St. Thomas the Apostle, known as “Doubting Thomas,” holds a special place in Christian history. His initial skepticism of Jesus’ resurrection and his eventual belief are key narratives. St. Thomas is believed to have traveled to India, preaching and converting many to Christianity before his martyrdom in Madras around AD 72. St. Thomas Church continues to thrive as a vibrant center of faith and community. Its story, from humble beginnings to its current prominence, reflects the dedication and perseverance of the Catholic community in South Delhi. The church welcomes visitors throughout the year, offering a space for worship, reflection, and connection.
