Is there a more charming name for a neighborhood than Virginia Highland? Here in Atlanta, we affectionately call it “VaHi.” It all began in the early 1900s as a streetcar suburb. The name? It comes directly from the bustling heart of the neighborhood: the intersection of Virginia Avenue and North Highland Avenue. Look around – see all the charming bungalows? They’re a testament to Virginia Highland’s history, mostly built between 1909 and 1926. Over time, Virginia Highland faced some tough times, like many urban areas. But the residents, they were something else! They fought hard against plans for a freeway that would have cut right through their beloved neighborhood. They won, and in its place now stands John Howell Memorial Park, named for a resident and anti-freeway activist. This victory marked a turning point. Virginia Highland blossomed, with residents lovingly restoring those beautiful old homes. Today, it’s a vibrant mix of trendy shops, fantastic restaurants, and a real sense of community.
