Was that train whistle? You might think you heard a train approaching, but that’s just a trick of the mind. You see, this is Bunour railway station. This station has been silent since 1993. It once bustled with workers heading to the industrial areas of Eagle Farm and Pinkenba. The station itself, named after the local Aboriginal word for the black and white ibis, opened much later than the Pinkenba line itself. While the line began operation in 1897, Bunour station didn’t open its doors until 1949. Imagine the influx of people needing transport after World War II. Just next door you would have seen the Damascus Barracks. This large complex served as an army camp, defense storage, and warehouse facility during the war. Today, the Damascus Barracks still stand as a reminder of that era. Sadly, Bunour station wasn’t so lucky. The electrification of the Pinkenba line in 1988 bypassed Bunour, leaving it served by infrequent diesel-hauled trains. The station, deemed unprofitable, shut its doors just five years later. Now, only the low-level platform remains, a silent testament to Bunour’s short-lived but vital role in Brisbane’s industrial history. Though the trains no longer run, a Translink bus stop conveniently sits right here, ready to whisk you away to your next destination.
