“The Glass House” they called it. A shimmering monument to mid-century modernism. That’s Park Center. Right here in Downtown Los Angeles.

Park Center wasn’t just any building. It was the former headquarters of the Los Angeles Police Department. For over half a century it stood tall. It served as a symbol of law and order. From 1955 until 2009 officers worked tirelessly within its walls.

Imagine. The hustle and bustle of detectives. The quiet concentration of crime scene analysts. The steady rhythm of typewriters clicking. Park Center housed them all. It was built with cutting-edge technology for its time. It even had a special lineup room. This room could simulate different lighting conditions. The LAPD was a pioneer. It became the first police department to use IBM computer equipment.

The building wasn’t just functional. It was also a work of art. Bernard Rosenthal’s bronze sculpture “The American Family” graced its entrance. Inside a breathtaking mosaic by Joseph Young depicted iconic Los Angeles landmarks. These works of art were removed before demolition. Sadly.

Park Center’s history isn’t all smooth sailing. The building became outdated. It needed costly seismic upgrades. Efforts were made to save it. A city panel nominated Park Center for historical status. The decision to demolish came in 2017. The building was eventually razed in 2019. It is now a memory. A memory that lives on in film and literature. The building was featured in countless movies and TV shows. It starred in “Dragnet” “Columbo” and “The Closer”. It remains a pivotal location in the Harry Bosch novels.

Park Center. Its legacy lingers. The memories remain. Its story is a testament to progress. It is a story of a building that once embodied the heart of law enforcement in Los Angeles.
