Did you know that Frende is a village, nestled on the right bank of the Douro River? Legend tells us that the name Frende itself has its origin in the words of a Portuguese king. King Afonso Henriques, during a pilgrimage to the Senhor de Cárquere, disembarked at a place that would later become known as Porto de Rei. As he climbed the steep slope on horseback, he stopped halfway to rest. Captivated by the panorama, he exclaimed, “Look at that beautiful place, in front of me!” The “t” in the Portuguese word “frente” (“in front of”) softened into a “d,” and the name Frende was born. Today, you stand in what was once considered a very fertile valley. Frende is a small village, but it’s a community with a rich history! You’ll see the remnants of that history in the local church. During the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, the church suffered damage, its façade collapsing twice. Despite its humble beginnings, Frende is a vibrant place, offering a glimpse into the past. Here, you can feel the legacy of those who came before, echoing in the very air you breathe.
