In 1952, a dream took root in Beverly Hills. The First Baptist Church of Beverly Hills began not in a grand edifice, but a humble real estate office on Canon Drive. Our journey starts here, at the First Baptist Church of Beverly Hills, a place whose story echoes the unwavering faith of its founders. The church’s Mediterranean Colonial style building stands as a testament to its unique history. Originally built in the 1920s for the Dutch Reform Church, this four-story structure is the sole surviving church from the old Town of Sherman, a landmark at the head of the Norma Triangle. The First Baptist Church congregation didn’t occupy this building until 1953. Led by Pastor Marshall DeVaugh, the congregation moved from the real estate office to a Legionnaires Hall before finding its final home in this historic structure in what is now West Hollywood. The purchase of the building itself is a story of divine intervention. Pastor DeVaugh, facing a looming escrow deadline and lacking the necessary funds, prayed in the sanctuary. He surrendered the situation to a higher power, admitting he had done all he could. A timely phone call from Dr. Posey of the Southern Baptist General Convention of California delivered a miraculous $5,000 donation. This exact amount allowed the church to close escrow, a testament to the power of faith. The First Baptist Church of Beverly Hills building was officially designated a Historic Site by the City of West Hollywood in 1993. It’s not just a place of worship, but a beacon of history. The church’s commitment to outreach is another remarkable chapter in its story. Under Pastor Tom Stringfellow, the “Feeding Those Who Feed Us” program began, extending a helping hand to migrant workers in central California. This initiative, born from a vision of service, provided clothing, school supplies, and shoes to children in need. Over its 15-year history, the program witnessed over 18,000 decisions for Christ and partnered with over 100 Baptist churches. The First Baptist Church of Beverly Hills isn’t just a building; it’s a living testament to faith, perseverance, and community. From its humble beginnings to its historic designation, it continues to serve as a spiritual anchor in the heart of Beverly Hills.
