Ciaculli remains one of the last countryside areas still dedicated to farming within the municipality. The A19 motorway separates Ciaculli from Palermo’s city center. This motorway forms Ciaculli’s northern border. The slopes of Mount Griffith, or Monte Grifone, mark its southern border.
However, Ciaculli’s story takes a darker turn. Ciaculli became an important location in the history of Cosa Nostra. The Sicilian Mafia’s presence here cast a shadow over the village. The Greco Mafia clan originated from Ciaculli. Its notoriety in the news linked Ciaculli to organized crime.
The year 1963 marked a grim chapter for Ciaculli. Frequent clashes during the First Mafia War shook the village. The Ciaculli massacre occurred on June 30, 1963. A car bomb claimed the lives of seven police and military officers. Later investigations revealed the bomb targeted mafia boss Salvatore Greco. This event triggered a strong reaction from the Italian government. It led to the creation of the Antimafia Commission.
The 1980s brought more violence to Ciaculli. The Second Mafia War led to new attacks and murders. The Grecos split into two factions. One faction aligned with the Corleonesi Mafia clan from Corleone. The other sided with the old Palermo clans. In 1982, mafia member Giuseppe Greco survived an ambush. He then forced residents of Ciaculli to leave if they couldn’t guarantee his safety.
Even between 2019 and 2024, investigations showed the Grecos still held influence. They managed criminal activities in Ciaculli. These activities included extorting money from local businesses and laundering money. In January 2019, a police raid stopped an attempt to restore the old mafia dome. Michele Greco’s nephew was among those arrested.
