Have you ever felt the weight of history pressing down? Here at the Evangelische Kirche Rendel you can. This church isn’t just a building it’s a living testament to centuries of faith and resilience. First mentioned in 1192 this humble chapel in Rendel quietly witnessed the ebb and flow of time.

The Evangelische Kirche Rendel stands slightly apart from the old village center nestled within a peaceful cemetery. Imagine a priest officiating at a service in this very spot almost eight hundred years ago. Records tell us that even then a chapel existed here in Rendela. In 1358 a significant event occurred. Heinrich Lord of Isenburg and Büdingen gifted the parish church of Rendel to the provost of the nearby Ilbenstadt monastery.

This act of generosity established a lasting connection. The monastery retained the right to appoint the parish priest until its dissolution in 1803. This illustrates the church’s deep rooted ties to the surrounding region. The power dynamics of the era are vividly portrayed in this simple act of patronage. The original church consisted only of the eastern part of what you see today the choir with the bell tower. This section is noticeably different from the nave.

The nave a later addition was built only between 1706 and 1709. The church underwent many transformations. The year 1535 marked a turning point. Konrad Gewend became the priest embracing the Augsburg Confession. He was Rendel’s first evangelical pastor. The Reformation’s influence is evident in the church’s history. Before that the church was dedicated to the saints Nereus Achilleus and Pankratius.

The Evangelische Kirche Rendel’s history echoes in every stone. The church has experienced extensive renovations throughout the years. In 1820-1829 the choir was altered. The magistrate’s chair and the priest’s chair were removed. Five new windows were created and a stone sacristy replaced the old wooden one. The nave received six new windows and new galleries. The church faced challenges. In 1875 a significant problem surfaced. Dry rot forced the floor to be ripped up. The floor had been used for burials before the nave was added. Drains were installed to solve the water problem. The Evangelische Kirche Rendel continues to stand as a symbol of faith community and the enduring spirit of Rendel itself.
