“Modder”. That’s the word that birthed the name of the Mörderberg. This modest elevation in Berlin’s Stadtrandsiedlung Malchow might not look like much. Yet, its name carries a curious history.

The Mörderberg rises a mere 56.6 meters above sea level. It is located south of Blankenburg’s old village center. The Mörderberg is also west of Malchow’s village center.

So, what’s with the ominous name? “Mörder” translates to “murderer” in German. Don’t worry. This isn’t a place of ancient executions, despite what you might think. The name’s origin is far less gruesome.

The name Mörderberg comes from the word “Modder.” Modder means mud. This points to the area’s poor soil quality. Over time, locals altered the name to Marderberg. “Marder” refers to the marten animal.

In 1705, King Frederick I purchased swampy land near Blankenburg. It was full of ponds and wet meadows. Muddy “Modder” gradually morphed into “Marder”. Eventually it became today’s Mörderberg.

Interestingly, there was a push to rename the bus stop near the Mörderberg. Some thought children would be scared to get off at a stop with such a name. Lobbyists for the nearby golf club supported the change. But local authorities rejected the proposal. They saw it as blatant self-interest from the golf club.

Today, you can still spot abandoned police barracks near the Mörderberg. They stand as silent witnesses to the area’s evolving story. From muddy fields to a name that hints at darker tales, the Mörderberg holds a unique place in Berlin’s landscape. So, next time you hear the name Mörderberg, remember it’s not about murderers. It is about mud.
