How about a bit of Imperial Beach history captured in bronze? The Spirit of Imperial Beach Statue stands before us a testament to this city’s identity. It shows how Imperial Beach used surfing to redefine itself.
Back in the late 1990s Imperial Beach needed a makeover. The city had a bad reputation. People associated it with crime not art. David Frink director of the Imperial Beach Arts Bureau recalls those days.
The Port of San Diego stepped in. They commissioned art installations to change perceptions. Surfing history became the inspiration. The Spirit of Imperial Beach was born. It stands on Palm Avenue and Ocean Lane.
The statue is more than just a surfer. It is a combination of local legend and Hollywood muscle. Dempsey Holder’s face tops Arnold Schwarzenegger’s body. Holder was an Imperial Beach lifeguard. He surfed massive waves in the 1950s. He braved the Tijuana River’s mouth without a leash or wetsuit.
Why Schwarzenegger’s body? A port commissioner wanted strength. He did not want a wimpy guy. Artist A. Wasil used photos of Schwarzenegger in his prime.
The Spirit of Imperial Beach includes more than just the surfer. Fish shells crabs and children with sand pails add to the scene. The sandcastle base recalls the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition. It used to be a yearly event here. Now the Sun and Sea Festival has replaced it.
Sadly Wasil passed away before his creation was installed in 2008. However his legacy lives on. He was a teacher and scholar of sculpture. He mentored young artists.
Malcolm Jones the artist behind Surfhenge worked alongside Wasil. They aimed to bring a positive image to Imperial Beach. The city sought an identity. They fastened on historic surfing. It was something they had to offer. This statue is a tribute to surfers who braved crazy waves here.
The 18-foot-tall Spirit of Imperial Beach represents surfers and lifeguards. It encapsulates the spirit of this coastal town. It reminds us of Imperial Beach’s transformation. The statue helps the city create a positive image.
Today Imperial Beach is full of public art. The IB Arts Bureau offers a digital map. You can find every piece. The Spirit of Imperial Beach remains popular. It is one of the city’s most photographed works of art. This bronze sculpture stands as a symbol. It changed how people view Imperial Beach.
