“Temples for the protection of the country by the four guardian deities of the golden light”. Do these words resonate with you? They echo the vision of Emperor Shōmu. Right before us stands the Shōmu Tennō Karyūisho Stele. It marks a place deeply connected to Emperor Shōmu.

Emperor Shōmu reigned from 724 to 749 during the Nara period. He was the 45th emperor of Japan. Shōmu’s reign was marked by significant events and a strong devotion to Buddhism.

Shōmu ascended the throne after Empress Gemmei and Empress Genshō. He faced challenges like a major smallpox epidemic. It caused high mortality rates across Japan.

Emperor Shōmu is known for making his consort Kōmyō an empress. She was not born into the imperial family. This broke tradition. He also moved the capital several times.

The stele reminds us of Emperor Shōmu’s tour to the eastern provinces. It was a journey influenced by the Fujiwara no Hirotsugu Rebellion. Shōmu traveled east, seeking to quell uprisings and solidify his rule.

Emperor Shōmu ordered the establishment of provincial temples. These temples and nunneries known as kokubunji and kokubunniji spread across the country. He wanted to protect the nation through Buddhism.

Shōmu’s most enduring legacy is the Daibutsu. It is the Great Buddha statue in Tōdai-ji. He ordered its construction in 743. This colossal project aimed to unite the country through faith. The statue stands sixteen meters high. It required vast amounts of bronze and precious metals.

In 749 Emperor Shōmu abdicated. He became the first retired emperor to become a Buddhist priest. Empress Kōmyō followed his example becoming a nun.

The Shōsō-in is a treasure house of Tōdai-ji Temple. It contains artifacts connected to Emperor Shōmu and Empress Kōmyō. These items offer a glimpse into the Tempyō era. They include furniture, musical instruments and Buddhist objects.

Emperor Shōmu’s dedication ceremony declared himself a slave of the Three Precious Things. These are the Buddha, Buddhist law and the church.

Emperor Shōmu died at age 56. He is venerated at a memorial Shinto shrine in Nara. The Imperial Household Agency maintains his mausoleum.

Standing before the Shōmu Tennō Karyūisho Stele allows us to reflect. We remember Emperor Shōmu’s devotion to Buddhism. We also think about his efforts to protect and unify Japan. His legacy continues to shape Japanese culture and spirituality.
