How did a sleepy farming village transform into a bustling industrial powerhouse? Welcome to Vernon California.

Once upon a time this land was known as Vernondale named for a Civil War veteran Captain George R Vernon. It was a picturesque place. Orchards and gardens flourished. The soil was rich. The area was called the garden spot of Los Angeles County.

But change was on the horizon. Enter John B Leonis a Basque businessman. He saw the potential of Vernon’s location near the railroads. He envisioned an industrial city. Leonis bought land. He persuaded railroad companies to build spur tracks. He made deals. He incorporated Vernon as the first exclusively industrial city in the Southwest in 1905.

The transformation was swift. Factories and warehouses sprang up. Meatpacking plants became a major industry. Vernon thrived. It attracted big companies. Owens-Illinois and Alcoa built facilities here.

But Vernon’s early history wasn’t without its scandals. It was a wild place. Saloons and gambling dens were common. Boxing matches drew crowds. The Vernon Tigers a minor league baseball team played here. This attracted eastern industrialists. They set up West Coast factories in Vernon.

The Leonis family wielded significant influence. They controlled the city’s politics for generations. Accusations of corruption plagued Vernon. High salaries and pensions were controversial. Investigations and legal battles followed.

In 2015 Vernon began to change. The city opened Vernon Village Park Apartments. These were available to the general public not just city employees. This marked a turning point. It aimed for more transparency and inclusivity.

Today Vernon remains an industrial hub. It employs thousands. It is home to many notable companies. Despite its history it has adapted. It aims to balance its industrial success with a modern approach. It is a story of transformation. It’s a fascinating place. A unique city. A place where industry and history collide.
