A red and white wave of pride courses through the halls. Welcome to Hoboken High School. It is the only secondary school in the Hoboken Public School system. Hoboken High School stands as a beacon of education. It shapes young minds in this dynamic city.
Hoboken High School opened its doors in September 1962. Before that, A. J. Demarest High School served the city. Demarest High School was dedicated in 1911. The new Hoboken High School was built to accommodate 1500 students. It initially served grades 10 through 12. Demarest then became a junior high school.
Hoboken High School has a rich history. The Middle States Association has accredited it since 1928. In 2013, Hoboken High School became a combined junior-senior high school. The middle school split off in 2016. It now serves grades seven and eight.
As of 2023, Hoboken High School has 607 students. There are 48 classroom teachers. The student-teacher ratio is about 12.6 to 1. About 45% of students qualify for free lunch.
Hoboken High School’s Redwings compete in the Hudson County Interscholastic League. They also compete in the North Jersey Super Football Conference. The school offers over 24 athletic programs. More than 30% of students participate. Sports include football, soccer, tennis, and more.
The Redwings football team has a storied past. They have won multiple state sectional championships. In 1996, the team was ranked 10th nationally by USA Today. From 1995 to 1998, the team’s record was an impressive 50 wins and 1 loss. The boys soccer team won the Group III state championship in 1991.
Hoboken High School also excels in the arts. The Musical Theatre and Drama program started in 1997. Students have earned Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Awards. They have also received recognition from The New York Times.
Hoboken High School offers many clubs. These include the African American Club and the Computer Club. Students can participate in the Drama Club or the Italian Club. The school also has a Model United Nations and a Science Fair.
Several notable alumni have walked these halls. Frank Sinatra, the famous singer, attended A. J. Demarest High School. Robert Ayers played in the NFL. Annette Chaparro is a New Jersey General Assembly member.
