What secrets does the Barnim Plateau hold? Here on the northeastern edge of Berlin, the Plateau stretches out before us, a silent keeper of millennia of history. The Barnim Plateau isn’t just a geographical feature. It’s a time capsule, layered with stories from the ice age to the rise of Berlin. The Plateau played a crucial role in shaping the region’s landscape during the Quaternary period, the ice age that carved out its distinctive plateaus and valleys. Today, Berlin’s water supply relies entirely on groundwater from the sediments of the Quaternary and preceding Tertiary periods, a hidden legacy of the Barnim Plateau. The plateau is divided into Upper and Lower Barnim. Lower Barnim rarely exceeds 80 meters above sea level. Upper Barnim rises above 100 meters, culminating in the 157-meter Semmelberg, the highest point on the Barnim Plateau. Interestingly, the southern edge of the Barnim Plateau, near Rüdersdorf, reveals unexpected limestone deposits. These deposits, pushed closer to the surface by a salt dome, supplied building materials for Berlin’s growth, notably the tower of St. Mary’s Church. The Barnim Plateau also cradles a crucial hydrological divide. This divide separates the drainage basins of the North Sea and Baltic Sea, as well as the Elbe and Oder rivers, tracing the path of the Frankfurt push moraine. This divide gives rise to numerous streams and a few lakes, like the Wandlitzer See. Even in the face of Berlin’s urban sprawl, the Barnim Plateau retains its quiet power. It’s a reminder that beneath the bustling city lies a landscape shaped by ice, time, and human endeavor.
