Nestled in the heart of Santa Monica, the Santa Monica Baha’i Center stands as a beacon of unity and peace. The Santa Monica Baha’i Center isn’t just a building. It’s a vibrant hub for a community dedicated to creating a better world. The Santa Monica Baha’i Center’s story begins in 1948. A small group of Baha’is, just eleven strong, gathered to elect the first Spiritual Assembly of Santa Monica. This marked the official beginning of the Baha’i community here. Their dream was to foster unity and understanding amongst the diverse population of Santa Monica. Over the decades, the Santa Monica Baha’i community grew, fueled by their shared belief in one God and the unity of all religions. The community faced challenges. The influx of Persian Baha’is fleeing persecution in Iran in the 1980s brought its own set of complexities, including the need for translations at gatherings and the growing need for a dedicated Baha’i Center. The dream of a physical center finally materialized in 2000 with the purchase of a church property on Colorado Avenue. This was a momentous occasion, a testament to the community’s unwavering dedication. The Santa Monica Baha’i Center officially opened its doors in 2002. It quickly became the heart of Baha’i activities, hosting feasts, holy day celebrations, children’s classes, and study groups. The Santa Monica Baha’i Center is more than just a place of worship. It’s a center for learning, dialogue, and community building, open to people of all backgrounds. The Center has hosted interfaith meetings, public talks on social issues, and even a dedication ceremony attended by city officials and community leaders. The Santa Monica Baha’i Center also plays an active role in the wider Santa Monica community. They’ve participated in the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations, worked with city organizations, and even hosted events addressing topics like career success and community building. Today, the Santa Monica Baha’i Center continues to thrive. It stands as a testament to the power of unity, the importance of service, and the unwavering pursuit of a better world.
