Hidden within Seoul’s bustling urban landscape lies Heonilleung, a royal tomb steeped in Joseon Dynasty history. Heonilleung isn’t just one tomb. It’s a combination of two distinct burial grounds: Heolleung and Illeung. Imagine standing before Heonilleung, a serene oasis amidst the city’s clamor. The first tomb, Heolleung, houses King Taejong, the third Joseon king, and his wife, Queen Wongyeong. King Taejong, a complex figure, played a crucial role in establishing the Joseon Dynasty. He implemented significant reforms in land, tax, military, and religious systems, bringing stability to the kingdom. His queen, Wongyeong, also played a pivotal role, contributing significantly to his rise to power. Heolleung reflects traditional tomb design with twin mounds connected by railings. The king rests in the left mound, while the queen’s tomb is on the right. Now, shift your gaze to Illeung, the second tomb within Heonilleung. Here lie King Sunjo, the 23rd Joseon king, and his wife, Queen Sunwon. Their story adds another layer to Heonilleung’s rich history. King Sunjo wasn’t originally buried here. His tomb was relocated from Paju Jangneung due to unfavorable geomancy, illustrating the importance of feng shui in Joseon burial practices. Heonilleung uniquely houses two kings born 400 years apart, offering a glimpse into both early and late Joseon Dynasty royal tomb styles.
