Originally called Capela da Piedade do Terreiro this chapel has quite a story. Today we know it as Capela de Nossa Senhora do Ó. It sits here at Largo do Terreiro. You will find it near the riverfront in the heart of Ribeira do Porto.

Its current name comes from an image. The image of Senhora do Ó was moved here. It came from the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade. That chapel was torn down in 1821.

The Capela de Nossa Senhora do Ó dates back to the 16th century. However it was rebuilt in the 18th century after suffering damage during the conflicts. After the civil war in the 19th century it was remodeled once more.

Look up at the roof of the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Ó. You will spot a niche crowned by a cross. The bell resides within.

Inside the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Ó a treasure awaits. It is the altarpiece crafted by João da Costa. He created it in the early 18th century. It is a sight you should not miss.

Originally the chapel was dedicated to Senhora da Piedade. The change to the current devotion began in 1821. This was when the image of Nossa Senhora was moved to the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Ó. This happened after the wall where it stood was demolished. Liberal struggles led to its destruction. This forced the remodeling of the chapel.

What truly stands out inside the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Ó? It is the stunning altarpiece. João da Costa created it in the early 18th century around 1712.

Its location is privileged. It sits in the city center. It offers views of the Ribeirinha and Casa do Infante. You can also see the Praça da Ribeira and Igreja de São Francisco. São Nicolau and Mercado Ferreira Borges are also visible.

An amazing image of Nossa Senhora do Ó stands to the right of the main altar. The older altarpiece by João da Costa is the highlight of this chapel.

Though small the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Ó is quite fine. The church is tiny with only a few rows of simple chairs. Yet a pulpit and a beautiful altar surprise visitors.

You can only visit Capela de Nossa Senhora do Ó by appointment. The visit lasts approximately 15 minutes.

The façade features a portal. A niche with the Virgin’s image sits above it. A frame surrounds the opening. Windows flank the entrance adorned with wavy panels above.

The Capela de Nossa Senhora do Ó is more than just a building. It holds history and art. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty. Imagine the stories within its walls. Remember the hands that built and rebuilt it.
