From experimental beginnings in a borrowed building to a modern hub of engineering innovation, the École polytechnique universitaire de Lille, or Polytech Lille, has quite a story. We’re standing before a testament to its evolution, a structure echoing the whispers of its past and the aspirations of its future. Polytech Lille wasn’t always this impressive. Imagine 1969, the year it all began. Tucked away in Building D, next to the École Centrale de Lille, the first students embarked on an experimental journey. Civil Engineering, Computer Science, and Technical-Commercial Careers were the initial offerings, laying the groundwork for what Polytech Lille would become. In 1974, these programs coalesced, officially forming the École universitaire d’ingénieurs de Lille, or EUDIL. This was a pivotal moment, as Lille and Montpellier became the first two French universities authorized to award engineering degrees through initial training. The school continued to evolve, gaining recognition and expanding its programs. In 1985, the Institut agricole et alimentaire de Lille (IAAL) joined the fold, further enriching the school’s offerings. Then, in 1992, the École d’ingénieur d’exploitation des systèmes de production (IESP) added its expertise to the mix. EUDIL was bursting at the seams, outgrowing its original building. A new structure was envisioned, a space to accommodate the burgeoning student body and ambitions. Construction began in 1997, and two years later, a modern EUDIL-IAAL building was inaugurated. The final piece of the puzzle fell into place in 2002. EUDIL, IAAL, and IESP officially merged, giving birth to the École polytechnique universitaire de Lille, or Polytech Lille as it’s commonly known. Today, Polytech Lille stands as a leading engineering school, a member of the prestigious Polytech group. It offers nine majors, covering a wide spectrum of engineering disciplines. Geomatics, computer science, civil engineering, materials science, and more are studied within these walls. The energy of innovation is palpable here at Polytech Lille. The spirit of those first experimental classes in a borrowed building lives on, transformed and amplified in this modern hub of learning.
