The story of Saint Joseph Catholic Church begins in 1666. French missionaries built a wooden church. Bishop Pierre Lambert de la Motte led this effort. He was a founder of the Paris Foreign Missions Society. King Narai of Ayutthaya Kingdom provided the land. Bishop Lambert arrived in Ayutthaya in 1662. He found a welcoming Christian community. It included Portuguese missionaries and a Spanish priest. They ministered to 2000 Christians.

In 1685 the wooden church was replaced. A chapel constructed of brick and mortar took its place. King Narai allowed Bishop Lambert freedom. He could evangelize build churches and establish missions. Ayutthaya became the main mission station for a century.

1767 marked a turning point. The Burmese captured Ayutthaya. The church and its buildings were destroyed. But the spirit of the community endured.

Bishop Pallegoix arrived in Siam in the 1840s. He took charge of the mission at Ayutthaya. In 1847 he built a chapel. It stood on the site of the old church. Jean-Louis Vey took over the mission in 1883. He commissioned French architect Joaquim Grassi. Grassi designed a new church to replace the chapel. The current Saint Joseph Catholic Church was built in the Romanesque style. It took eight years to complete. The first mass was held in 1891.

Cardinal Michael Michai Kitbunchu restored the church in 2003. Saint Joseph Catholic Church has been a place of worship for over 300 years.
