“It’s quite a sight, isn’t it?” you might say, gesturing towards the imposing structure of the Mount Carmels Church. As you stand right in front of the building, its history whispers through the air. The Mount Carmels Church, as it is known today, isn’t the original one. This building was constructed in 1981 after the old church simply became too small. It was all built to accommodate the ever-growing number of Catholics in the area. The foundation stone was laid in 1894 by Jesuit Missionaries. The old Mount Carmels Church was built near the Mahim creek, opposite of what was known as the Customs House. Today, the area is known as Bandra Reclamation. The new church has a very striking design. The canopy at the entrance is supposed to symbolize two hands joined in prayer. The original church’s main altar was even brought from a ruined church in Diu. It is a testament to the rich history and dedication of the local community. The church stands as a symbol of the Catholic faith in the heart of Mumbai. It is a place where people pray and find solace, offering a space for reflection and connection. No matter how many times you visit Mount Carmels Church, it never fails to evoke a sense of peace and awe.
