Gazing at Biserica Ortodoxă Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul – Militari, can you hear the echoes of its past? This church, nestled in Bucharest’s Militari district, holds a story as rich as its Venetian mosaic floors. The original structure, a humble chapel, was a gift from Dumitru and Tudora Dumitru from Chiajna. It was consecrated in November 1943, a beacon of faith during turbulent times. This small chapel still stands today, a testament to the enduring spirit of the community, quietly residing south of the main church. Biserica Ortodoxă Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul – Militari as we see it today rose between 1957 and 1974 under Patriarch Justinian’s guidance. Architect Ion Paraschivescu’s vision came to life thanks to the combined efforts of the Archdiocese of Bucharest, the parishioners of Militari III, and a generous contribution from Militari I. The church walls whisper stories of artistic collaboration. Painters Iosif Keber and Ion Jianu adorned the interior with vibrant neo-Byzantine frescoes. The glint of Venetian mosaic underfoot adds to the church’s splendor. The carved wooden iconostasis, a gift from Petre and Ecaterina Alexandrescu, stands as a focal point of devotion. Biserica Ortodoxă Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul – Militari’s story doesn’t end with its construction. The formal consecration didn’t happen until October 1978, led by IPS Vicar Patriarchal Antonie Plămădeală. Years later, in 1997, the church’s exterior underwent renovations, receiving a fresh coat of paint and plaster. The interior frescoes were also carefully restored around this time, thanks to the dedication and financial support of Father Ion Covercă. The church’s interior glows with the warm light of bronze chandeliers, one donated by Father Covercă’s family and another by the family of Father Gheorghe Șeitan. A former building on the church grounds now houses the parish office and a mortuary chapel, consecrated in 2005 by Bishop Vicar Sebastian. More recent enhancements to Biserica Ortodoxă Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul – Militari include the addition of eleven stained-glass windows in 2003, made possible by the parishioners and the Covercă family. Even now, the spirit of improvement continues, with ongoing work on a new candle shop.
