This imposing structure before you is the Genç Parti Genel Merkezi. It stands as a testament to a party with a colourful history.

The Genç Parti Genel Merkezi is more than just a building. It’s the heart of a political movement. Founded in 2002 by Cem Uzan the party initially emerged from the Yeniden Doğuş Partisi. It quickly made a name for itself. This was largely due to Uzan’s media empire. He used Star TV and newspapers to promote his party’s message. Some even compared him to Silvio Berlusconi.

The 2002 general elections saw the Genç Parti achieve a surprising 7.25% of the vote. It was a remarkable feat for a party entering its first election. Sadly they fell short of the 10% threshold needed for parliamentary seats. The party’s success was short lived. They only secured 3.04% in the 2007 elections.

Cem Uzan’s outspoken criticism of then-Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan led to legal troubles. Uzan faced charges and ultimately a conviction resulting in an eight-month prison sentence and a fine. He was also ordered to read books on anger management. Quite a unique punishment for a politician.

The Genç Parti’s influence waned after the 2007 election. The party did not participate in elections for many years. Cem Uzan left Turkey and sought political asylum in France. In 2020 Hakan Uzan took over as party leader. The party attempted a comeback in the 2023 elections but achieved only 0.21% of the vote. In 2024 they decided not to run. Instead they endorsed candidates from the CHP. This decision reflects the ever-shifting landscape of Turkish politics.

The Genç Parti Genel Merkezi itself is a striking building. Its nine stories stand tall on Mithat Paşa Caddesi in Ankara. It served as a stage for Uzan’s ambitious political aspirations. It remains a visible reminder of a period of significant upheaval and change within the country’s political scene. The Genç Parti Genel Merkezi stands as a silent observer. It witnessed the rise and fall of a party once considered a major force. Its walls hold the echoes of vibrant campaigns and tumultuous events. It is a compelling piece of Ankara’s political history.
