Could a church have witnessed a village’s rebirth? Here at the Dorfkirche in Gollwitz, a district of Brandenburg an der Havel, that very question hangs in the air. The Dorfkirche, a late Gothic hall church, stands as a testament to resilience. Its very stones whisper tales of destruction and renewal. The Brandenburg State Office for Monument Preservation casts doubt on the commonly held belief that the Dorfkirche originated in the 13th or 14th century. They suggest a 15th-century origin, a time shortly after Magdeburgian troops destroyed Gollwitz in 1413. However, records show Gollwitz possessed a parish hide, an indication of a church, as early as 1375. This fact, alongside the church’s eastward expansion and late Gothic elements like the sacramental niche with its Madonna figure, suggest a complex timeline. Gollwitz, an independent parish around 1450, later became a subsidiary of Jeserig, then a daughter church to Wust before 1541. Patronage of the Dorfkirche initially solely held by the lord of the manor, was later shared with the Neustadt Brandenburg council. By 1690, it became a daughter church of Neustadt Brandenburg, eventually joining Schmerzke in 1708. The Dorfkirche underwent significant transformation in 1750 under Friedrich Christoph von Görne. He elevated the west tower, enlarged the windows in Baroque style, and reconstructed the nave’s ceiling. A wall with an integrated pulpit divided the church’s eastern section in 1823. Around this time, a second crypt beneath the altar was likely filled. Gollwitz regained its mother church status in 1854. Unapproved repairs in 1934 caused issues with the tower’s south side plaster. Extensive renovations between 1966 and 1968 addressed structural issues and the tower’s roof. The patron’s box transformed into a community space. The 1823 pulpit and other furnishings were removed, and the church saw declining use. Renewed renovations in 1991, halted in 1994 due to funding, left the roof exposed for years. Work resumed in 1995, leading to a new roof, treatment for fungal infestation, interior renovations, a new west gallery, and renovations to the north annex and tower. In 2020, the interior underwent further extensive work, revealing a consecration cross, one of twelve believed to have originally adorned the church. The nave ceiling is now decorated with “Schinkel stars,” a nod to the renowned architect. The Dorfkirche in Gollwitz stands as a quiet sentinel, its stones echoing the ebb and flow of history, reminding us that even in destruction, new beginnings can arise.
