Unique in Hamburg. That is the Petruskirche Lokstedt. It stands as the only church designed by architect Gert Pempelfort in this city.

The Petruskirche Lokstedt was inaugurated on October 27, 1968. Its construction coincided with plans for the Lenzsiedlung. The church would serve as a vital part of the neighborhood.

Until 1996, the Petruskirche Lokstedt was at the heart of its own parish. Later, restructuring considered closing it. The Lokstedt parish refocused. It centered activities around the Christ-König-Kirche. The old Petruskirche community center was abandoned. The Petruskirche Lokstedt was redesigned for diverse uses. Today it shares its space with a Korean congregation.

The most striking feature of the Petruskirche is its 28-meter-high tower. It has a unique design. The main entrance faces west. A concrete relief on the gable and door designs present stylized depictions. The bronze door relief portrays the Creation story. The concrete gable relief shows the Lamb of God. Artist Nanette Lehmann created both.

Inside, the church accommodates 230 people. The interior is simple and clear. Colorful stained-glass windows dominate the west wall. A brick wall stands behind the altar on the north side. Six candleholders and a cross adorn the altar. Heinz Neumann crafted the bronze baptismal font. It features stylized children carrying the basin together.

Since Easter 1971, the Petruskirche Lokstedt has housed an organ from Detlef Kleuker’s workshop. It allows for organ music spanning various styles. Even modern pieces can be played. The organ has 39 registers. Its features include couplers, free combinations, a crescendo roller, and more.

Consider the history of the Petruskirche. It faced potential closure. Now it thrives. It supports multiple communities. Its architecture is distinct. Its art tells stories. The Petruskirche Lokstedt stands as a testament to faith, art, and community.
