In 1721, a sprawling farmstead complex took shape in Desio. This was Cascina Bolagnos. It began humbly, a cluster of houses and stables dating back to the 1500s. Count Giuseppe Bolagnos, the estate’s owner, envisioned something grander. He saw a haven for farmers and their livestock. He imagined sturdy walls enclosing cows, bulls, calves, pigs, and donkeys. Cascina Bolagnos soon became Desio’s largest farmstead, a testament to Bolagnos’ vision. Even the access roads were rerouted, acknowledging the Count’s extensive land ownership. Bolagnos himself did not live to see the full realization of his project. He passed away in 1732, leaving his son, Don Carlo, to inherit the property. However, Carlo honored his father’s wishes. He ensured that the Palazzo Bolagnos in Milan would pass to the Ospedale Maggiore if he died without heirs. This came to pass in 1758. Around 1759, Marquis Gerolamo Cusani purchased Cascina Bolagnos and its surrounding lands from the hospital. The cascina became more than just a farm. It became a self-contained community. It was a place where families lived, worked, and thrived. Cascina Bolagnos remained a working farm well into the 20th century. A 1954 aerial photograph captures the first family homes clustered around the main structure. The 1960s offer glimpses into life at Cascina Bolagnos. Internal corridors facilitated the social life of the farming families. Communal toilets stood outside for hygiene. Children played near the northwest wing. Stalls and haylofts were in full swing. The “Casinott,” a small building near the east side, served as a gathering spot. Images of the San Rocco festival in 1965 capture the last days of agricultural activity, with the legendary “Fortuna” visible beneath a stall. Cascina Bolagnos stands as a testament to Count Giuseppe Bolagnos’ ambition and a snapshot of rural life in Lombardy.
