At the heart of the bustling Politecnico di Milano, in the heart of the city, lies the Laboratorio getti molecolari e materiali nanocristallini, a hub of innovation where the world of the incredibly small is explored. This laboratory is a fascinating realm where scientists delve into the mysteries of micro and nanotechnology. Founded in 1992, the laboratory initially focused on using laser spectroscopy to study the vibrational, structural, and elastic properties of materials. It was in 2001, however, that the laboratory began its most exciting work. It entered into a partnership with the Laboratorio Getti Molecolari e Materiali Nanocristallini, led by Paolo Milani. This collaboration focused on the deposition of nano-structured carbon films, using advanced and in-situ characterizations. In 2003, the Laboratorio Materiali Micro-e NanoStrutturati, joined forces with four other Politecnico laboratories to form the NEMAS Center (Center for NanoEngineered MAterials and Surfaces). This center, recognized by the MIUR (Ministry of Education, University and Research) as a center of excellence, put the laboratory and the entire Politecnico at the forefront of nanotechnology research. Today, the Laboratorio getti molecolari e materiali nanocristallini, with state-of-the-art facilities, continues to explore the exciting world of nanomaterials, paving the way for groundbreaking technologies that will shape the future.
