Established in 1889 Calvary Baptist Church stands tall. It began its life as the Second Baptist Church. This humble beginning was at 1st and B Street. Imagine the San Diego of that era. Then in 1926 a significant move occurred. The church relocated. Its new home was at the corner of Crosby and Julian streets. This is now Cesar E Chavez Parkway. The name changed too. It officially became Calvary Baptist Church.
The story of Calvary Baptist Church is one of growth and adaptation. Reverend N E “Son” Taylor led the church from 1942. His tenure saw services broadcast on local radio. A Hammond organ was purchased enriching the church’s musical life. The church’s music ministry became renowned.
Reverend S M Lockridge took the reins in 1952. His leadership saw a massive increase in membership. A new sanctuary was built remarkably debt-free. Expansion was ambitious. Eight properties were acquired near the main sanctuary. Two parsonages were added in La Mesa. The sanctuary choir became one of San Diego’s finest. It even performed for Dr Martin Luther King Jr. at the United States International University. Its influence extended to the Progressive District the California State Convention and the National Missionary Baptist State Convention.
Reverend W James Smith’s tenure from 1994 saw the expansion of many ministries. These included winter bible study grief management and youth worship. Calvary’s services went online expanding its reach.
Dr Emanuel Whipple Sr led from 2011. He oversaw the purchase of a wheelchair-accessible bus. An accredited seminary was launched. Twenty-four-hour surveillance cameras were installed. Numerous structural improvements were completed.
Calvary Baptist Church is more than a building. It’s a testament to faith community and resilience. It’s a place where history echoes in the hymns and sermons. It’s a place where the spirit of San Diego’s African American community thrives. It’s a living legacy. A vibrant part of San Diego’s rich history.
