A fragrant breeze whispers secrets of the past. Welcome to Plantage Peperpot.

Before you stands a testament to Suriname’s rich history. Plantage Peperpot is more than just a former coffee plantation. It’s a living museum a vibrant nature park. It’s one of Suriname’s oldest plantations its origins shrouded in mystery somewhere between 1651 and 1660.

Legend whispers of an English planter the first to cultivate sugar cane here. But it was Simon van Halewijn a Dutchman who made his mark in 1696. He expanded the plantation to over 900 acres. He owned neighboring plantations too Mopentibo Puttenzorg and ‘t Ylant. Even Beaumont higher up the river belonged to him.

Van Halewijn switched from tobacco to cacao then to coffee. He died in 1727 leaving his vast holdings to relatives who never set foot in Suriname. This absentee ownership a common practice in colonial Suriname was managed by an administrator Jan Pichot. Imagine the lives of the overseers the managers and the enslaved workers all under the distant gaze of wealthy owners in Europe.

In the first half of the 19th century Catholic missionaries were allowed onto the plantation. This took place under the supervision of Jacobus Grooff. Later owners included Casper Lodewijk van Uytrecht de Veer a son of the governor of Suriname. Upon emancipation in 1863 fifty-one enslaved people gained their freedom. The plantation continued operating using contract workers mostly Chinese then Hindustani and Javanese. Even Creoles from the interior joined their ranks.

In 1994 Plantage Peperpot finally closed its doors. Its history lives on however in the beautifully preserved buildings. You can visit the former directors house the officers quarters and the old coffee factory a unique artifact of Suriname’s past. This once bustling plantation now a nature park invites you to explore its trails. You can canoe through its waterways or simply relax under the shade of ancient trees imagining the lives of those who walked before you. Today it protects 820 hectares of biodiversity. Plantage Peperpot a window into Suriname’s past and a sanctuary for its future.
