“Lost?” a voice echoed through the crisp mountain air. We stand here, before the Kohleralm, breathing in the invigorating scent of pine and damp earth. The Kohleralm is more than just a simple alpine hut nestled on the slopes of the Gamsknogel in the Chiemgau Alps. Its story stretches back to at least 1532, when it was known as the Obere Staffn Alm. Imagine life then, the rugged terrain, the isolation. The Kohleralm has witnessed centuries of change, evolving from a simple shelter for shepherds to a welcoming haven for hikers. The main building, a testament to generations of alpine architecture, blends stone and wood. The lower portion, crafted from sturdy stone, rises to a knee-high level. From there, the structure transitions to a traditional blockbauweise, where logs are carefully interlocked to form the walls. Attached to the main dwelling is a stable, also built in the same charming blockbauweise. The western gable, a striking feature, is partly clad in shingles, while the remaining section is covered with protective metal sheeting. Entry to this alpine haven is through the eastern gable end, though other entrances exist on the western gable and the northern side. A fenced-in Grashof invites you to linger, with its charming almtische (alpine tables) and a wooden trough, its water gurgling from a natural spring. Just north of the main building, you’ll find a smaller wooden hut, completely shingled and divided into two sections. The southern part serves as an open shelter for livestock, protecting them from the elements. Another wooden trough, fed by a spring, stands beside the hut. The Kohleralm isn’t a relic of the past. It’s a living piece of history, offering warmth, refreshment, and a glimpse into a simpler time. It stands as a testament to the enduring connection between humans and the mountains, a place where stories are shared, and traditions are kept alive. So, take a moment to soak it all in. Feel the history, the resilience, the quiet strength of the Kohleralm.
