Shrouded in shadows the Walter E Fernald Developmental Center stands before us.

This imposing structure holds a complex history. It began in 1848 as the Massachusetts School for the Feeble-Minded. It was a pioneering institution in the US a place meant to care for people with intellectual disabilities. It was the oldest publicly funded institution of its kind in the Western Hemisphere.

But the Fernald’s story is not simple. Under its third superintendent Walter E Fernald it became a model institution. However the 20th century saw the rise of eugenics. This pseudoscience led to horrific practices. The Fernald unfortunately reflected this dark chapter in history. Many residents faced harsh conditions. They were subjected to involuntary sterilization and unethical medical experiments.

One particularly chilling example is the 1940s and 50s experiment. Seventy-three boys aged 10-17 were fed radioactive oatmeal and milk. They were not given proper consent. The experiment aimed to study nutrient absorption. This is just one horrific example of countless abuses.

The Fernald’s population grew dramatically from its founding. It housed over 2600 people at its peak. Many of these residents were subjected to forced labor and poor living conditions. Life inside was often brutal. Reggie Clark a former resident described harsh conditions like early wake-up calls and endless chores.

The Fernald eventually closed in 2014. The last residents left after a long legal battle. The city of Waltham then purchased the land. This is an ongoing story. The city’s plans for the property have caused controversy. Many feel the site’s history needs careful consideration. Leaving the land untouched would respect its darker past.

The Walter E Fernald Developmental Center stands as a reminder of the past. It’s a reminder that we must always fight for the rights and dignity of all individuals. The Fernald story is both tragic and inspiring. It is a story we must remember. We must learn from it and ensure such abuses never happen again. The Fernald’s legacy continues to shape conversations about disability rights today.
