Did the very ground beneath Masjid Al-Hajjar tremble as the Prophet Muhammad arrived? Masjid Al-Hajjar stands before us in Medina, a city steeped in Islamic history. This “City of the Messenger” became the heart of the early Muslim community after the Prophet’s migration from Mecca in 622 AD. This migration, known as the Hijra, marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar. Medina, formerly Yathrib, welcomed the Prophet and his companions, offering them refuge and support. Masjid an-Nabawi, the second largest mosque in the world, lies within Medina and houses the Prophet’s tomb. While Masjid Al-Hajjar might not possess the grandeur of Masjid an-Nabawi, its presence in this sacred city connects it to the rich tapestry of Islamic history. Medina, also known as “The Enlightened City”, became a hub of religious and political activity during the Prophet’s lifetime. He established the first mosque in Islam, Masjid Al-Quba, also in Medina, solidifying the city’s significance. The very air of Medina seems to vibrate with the echoes of prayers and pronouncements that shaped the course of Islam. Interestingly, Medina is renowned for its date palms, producing over 300 varieties despite its desert location. The city’s agricultural richness contrasts with the harsh surrounding landscape, making it a true oasis in the desert. Today, millions of Muslims visit Medina annually, drawn to its spiritual magnetism and historical importance. As we stand before Masjid Al-Hajjar, let us reflect on Medina’s vital role in the development of Islam and its enduring legacy as a beacon of faith.
