It was built in the heart of Longgang District, in the quaint village of Xinqiao. This grand structure, a testament to Huang’s prosperity, is one of over sixty such residences built by the clan. The story of 新乔世居 begins not in Shenzhen, but in Meizhou during the late Ming dynasty. The Huang clan’s patriarch, Huang Chaogong, first established their roots there. Later, seeking new opportunities, the family moved to Guishan in Huizhou. It was Huang Juzhong, the second-generation leader, who led this migration during the Kangxi era. They prospered in their new home, laying the groundwork for their future prominence. But the story doesn’t end there. The Huang clan’s destiny intertwined with Xinqiao during the reign of the Yongzheng Emperor. Huang Zhong, the third-generation head, relocated the family once more. Driven by ambition and the promise of prosperity, they established themselves in this small village. They quickly became influential figures in the region. The clan’s fortunes continued to rise under Huang Zhenzong, the fourth generation patriarch. His leadership and shrewd business acumen saw the family amass considerable wealth. Their land holdings expanded significantly, almost rivaling the wealthiest in the prefecture. It was during this period of unprecedented prosperity, in 1753, that Huang Zhenzong commissioned the construction of 新乔世居. This grand 圍 house, with its distinctive architectural style, served as a symbol of the Huang clan’s status and influence. The inscription “新乔世居,” carved into the gate’s stone lintel, marked their place in history. The 新乔世居 stands today as a reminder of their remarkable journey. From humble beginnings in Meizhou, the Huang clan rose to become one of Shenzhen’s most prominent families.
