Can a sculpture be a time machine? Here at the Throwback Sculpture, it feels like we’re stepping back into the 1970s. Tony Smith, the artist, named it Throwback because it reminded him of an earlier period in his work. This large, geometric sculpture dominates the MMC Plaza. The Throwback Sculpture isn’t just a static object. It’s an experience. Walk around it. Notice how the light plays on the black aluminum surfaces. It’s made of welded aluminum sheets, formed into a hollow, four-sided ring. Did you know there are actually three Throwback sculptures? This one is the first of an edition of three, created between 1976 and 1979. The others reside in museums. This Throwback Sculpture has called MMC Plaza home since its creation. The plaza itself has an interesting history. It’s been a popular public space in New York City for decades, undergoing several renovations. Originally, the Throwback Sculpture sat in a brick-lined fountain basin with cascading water. It gave the illusion that the massive sculpture was floating. The landscape has changed over the years, but the Throwback Sculpture remains. It stands as a testament to artistic vision and the enduring power of public art. This Throwback Sculpture truly makes you think about how art interacts with its environment. It’s a powerful piece of art.
