Is it possible for a temple to rise from ashes repeatedly? At Honden-ji Temple in Osaka it has happened more than once. This temple stands as a testament to resilience. Honden-ji is a Nichiren Buddhist temple. Its history is marked by both devastation and renewal.

Founded between 1592 and 1596 by Busshoji Niccho. He was a disciple of Kukyo-in Nichiyo. Kukyo-in Nichiyo was the 16th of Daihonzan Kyoto Honkoji. Honden-ji has faced numerous fires throughout its history. Each time, the main hall was rebuilt.

During World War II in 1945 the temple was completely destroyed. It was during the Osaka Air Raids. The indiscriminate bombings left nothing but ruins. Then, in 1995 the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake caused significant damage. Yet, Honden-ji persevered.

The temple is also known as the burial site of the Tani brothers of the Shinsengumi. Tani Sanjuro was the 7th unit leader. Tani Mantaro served at the Osaka magistrate’s office. Tani Tamehiro was an adopted son of Kondo Isami.

Despite its turbulent past, Honden-ji offers a serene escape. It is a place of quiet contemplation in the bustling city. The temple’s grounds provide a sanctuary. Here you can get away from the hustle and bustle of Osaka.

Honden-ji’s main deity is the Treasure Pagoda. Its mountain name is Koyo-san. Today, Honden-ji continues to welcome visitors. People of all backgrounds come to experience its peaceful atmosphere. The temple stands as a symbol of hope and perseverance. It embodies the enduring spirit of Osaka. A visit to Honden-ji is a journey through history and a moment of reflection.
