Emerging from the ashes of post-war Berlin, Konsum-Berlin became a symbol of resilience. It offered solace and essential goods. In December 1945, a simple consumer cooperative named “Konsum” emerged in the Soviet occupation zone. Within just three years, nearly 300 independent Konsum cooperatives flourished across various cities. The German Consumer Cooperative Union (Verband Deutscher Konsumgenossenschaften or VDK) aimed to meet the population’s needs. They focused on broad coverage and affordable prices. Konsum-Berlin was a vital part of this network. Its varied selling points included Kaufhalle supermarkets, smaller village shops, and even mobile buses that brought groceries to rural communities. In the 1950s, a Konsum ship named “Kambala” served the needs of inland sailors. Konsum-Berlin’s influence grew. By the mid-1950s, over 3 million members relied on Konsum for their daily needs. The phrase “to go to the Konsum” became synonymous with grocery shopping. This growth led to a brand identity. In 1959, graphic designer Karl Thewalt designed the iconic Konsum logo. An industrial chimney combined with a curved sickle formed a prominent “K.” This illuminated symbol adorned Konsum-Berlin rooftops, visible from afar. Konsum-Berlin was more than just shops. Over 150 companies formed the Konsum chain. Twenty-eight of these were directly under the VDK. Konsum-Berlin produced many of the products sold in its stores. A network of Konsum restaurants complemented the stores. These restaurants utilized the cooperative’s products. They diversified the gastronomic landscape. Some were even leased to private innkeepers. Konsum-Berlin continued its impressive expansion. By the late 1980s, its membership had grown. It reached 4.5 million members. Its private ownership shielded it from the post-reunification changes. It was unaffected by the Trust Agency after the Peaceful Revolution. Following reunification and the German Cooperative Societies Act of October 3, 1990, regional consolidation took place. Two hundred independent Konsum cooperatives merged. They formed 55 regionally active cooperatives. Some of these unions still operate sales branches today. They carry on the Konsum legacy. Konsum-Berlin stands as a testament. It recalls a time of cooperative strength. It serves as a reminder of resourcefulness in times of hardship.
