Gazing at the magnificent Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, one might think they’ve stumbled upon a grand movie set. It’s no coincidence. This architectural masterpiece owes its existence to a Hollywood success story. Greek immigrant Charles Skouras, along with his brothers Spyros and George, made a vow. If they found success in Hollywood, they would build a magnificent cathedral. And they certainly did find success, with Charles leading Fox West Coast, Spyros heading 20th Century Fox, and George at the helm of Universal. True to their word, the Skouras brothers funded the construction of Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral in 1948, opening its doors in 1952. Sadly, Charles passed away just two years later, unable to fully enjoy the fruits of his labor. The cathedral, a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument, stands as a testament to his devotion. Designed in the Byzantine style, Saint Sophia is patterned after the Hagia Sophia of Constantinople, its namesake meaning “Holy Wisdom of God.” While the exterior is impressive with its signature green dome, the interior is truly breathtaking. Seventeen Czechoslovakian crystal chandeliers, each weighing a ton, illuminate the space. Twelve massive stained-glass windows depict the twelve Apostles, their vibrant colors enhanced by the sunlight streaming through. High above, in the 30-foot diameter dome, a massive likeness of Christ is surrounded by the Evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. An inscription from the New Testament reads, “I Am the Light of the World. He who believes in me shall not walk in darkness but have the light of life.” Gold, bronze, and marble adorn the altar, complemented by a gold leaf pulpit. A massive painting of the Virgin Mary and Child dominates the space above the altar, her arms outstretched in a gesture of embrace. The Bishop’s Throne, flanked by lions symbolizing the strength of Christ and the Gospel, features a painting of a double-headed eagle behind it, a nod to the Byzantine Empire. A bronze-and-copper Baptismal font and an elaborate, hand-carved olive-wood sepulcher from Greece grace the Nave floor. Fifty-five paintings inspired by scripture and holy tradition cover the surrounding walls, including a depiction of Moses holding the Ten Commandments. The Saint Sophia Cathedral has also played host to significant events, including the funeral of actor Telly Savalas in 1994 and the wedding of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson. The cathedral continues to serve its predominantly Greek congregation, drawing members from a wide radius across Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Even today, the spirit of Hollywood lingers here, a testament to the Skouras brothers’ legacy.
