What if I told you this unassuming plaque holds a piece of Berlin’s rich history? Right here before us stands the Goldtrompetenbäume Plaque a Berlin Memorial Plaque. These aren’t just random street signs. They are part of a significant program. The program started in 1985. It was created in anticipation of Berlin’s 750th anniversary in 1987. The Royal Porcelain Factory meticulously crafted these porcelain-colored panels. Each plaque measures 60 by 40 centimeters. They bear the title Berlin Memorial Plaque in capital letters. A cobalt blue inscription on a white background provides context. A cobalt blue sceptre the factory’s logo is at the base. Graphic artist Wieland Schütz won the design competition.

The Goldtrompetenbäume Plaque is one of hundreds. Initially West Berlin districts were to receive around 25 plaques each. The Sparkasse bank generously sponsored these. The first three plaques went up on October 22 1985. After the Peaceful Revolution the program expanded to East Berlin. The Sparkasse continued its support. By the year 2000 they aimed to place 350 plaques. Each now cost a hefty 3000 marks. The Historical Commission of Berlin oversaw the project. The Sparkasse’s funding eventually ran out.

Today the process is different. Applicants must pay 2500 Euros. They need permission from the property owner and the district council. The Historical Commission approves each plaque. Wieland Schütz still helps with the design. The KPM the Royal Porcelain Factory handles the final production. The applicant is responsible for installing the plaque. The district office then owns the plaque. This Goldtrompetenbäume Plaque is a tangible link to that past. It represents a person place or event deemed important enough to be permanently commemorated in Berlin’s cityscape. It’s a small detail. Yet it’s a powerful symbol of Berlin’s ongoing efforts to remember and honor its history. So take a moment to appreciate this little piece of Berlin. It tells a big story.
